The Vishnu Sahasranama ("Thousand Names of Vishnu") is one of the most sacred texts of Vaishnavism, found in the Mahabharata's Anushasana Parva. It was recited by Bhishma on his deathbed to Yudhishthira in answer to the question: "Who is the one God? Who is the highest refuge?" This page contains the first 24 names with their meanings. Reading the full Sahasranama daily is believed to bring health, prosperity and liberation.
नामानि सहस्राणि विष्णोर्यत्र पठन्ति वै।
जन्म मृत्युजरारोगं पापं यत्र न विद्यते॥
Where the thousand names of Vishnu are recited, there is no birth, death, old age, disease or sin.
